Bringing Living Water

Jesus said, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him." John 7:37-38 (NIV)

Living Water is what has sustained us in recent days. During one period of time, we were without city water for almost two weeks, and other parts of the city were without water for almost a month. This was difficult for everyone - most of the people here are used to living with unreliable electricity, but not without water. The whole situation caused me to ponder this verse. Hearing of people begging for water made me think about how many of them are destitute without the Living Water and yet they don't beg for Him. Many have turned their back on Him and have chosen to follow money or power or a false religion. Every day we are losing people who don't have the Living Water! Pray that we will take every opportunity to share the Good News of Jesus Christ, the Living Water, with people who do not know Him.

A young African woman pours water from a blue basin on her head

The main water tap was broken, so the women walked to the edge of the village to draw water from a well usually reserved for watering the animals. The line was long. Sometimes the talk was light and cheerful, but at other moments the words turned harsh and angry if water was spilled or someone tried to take too much. As I waited in line and watched the women, the story in John 4:1-26 played in my mind. My Jesus knows each heart and sees each need here. HE knows how they thirst for living water. Oh, how I longed for the words to share His story with them. At last my turn came and I joined a woman as we pulled the rope up from the deep well. Murky water filled my bucket and as I turned to go, a woman helped me place the bucket on my head. As I walked back to our room, the weight I carried was not the water on my head, but a burden in my heart for so many thirsty souls in a dry, parched land.

Please share my burden by asking the Father to open the hearts of the people so that streams of Living Water will flow throughout these lands.
